Wolf might just be my favorite game to play on the course. The reason - I love to get cocky and go it alone for the big points. Wolf is a great game where being too confident can break you and hitching your wagon to the right horses can make you. You don't have to be the best player that day if you take advantage of your opportunities and play strategically. This game works great for 3 or 4 players, and we recommend a stroke play better ball format.
- Determine how much you want to wager on the overall outcome. (you can go by point differential or a set amount per player) Wolf is typically played over an 18 hole stretch where the winner takes the entire pot, but you can easily add a Nassau to this game.
- Playing order is critical, you will need to establish playing order before the first tee. On each tee you will rotate who is the wolf (front to back or back to front, doesn't matter) keeping the same lineup until you reach the final holes. For a foursome, the wolf for the 17th and 18th holes should be whomever has the least amount of points. For a threesome, this applies to the 16th, 17th, and 18th. (example: hole 1 order - 1, 2, 3, 4 [wolf] | hole 2 order - 2, 3, 4, 1 [wolf] | hole 3 order - 3, 4, 1, 2 [wolf] | so on and so forth until holes 17 and 18)
- The wolf always tees off last.
- After the first player tees off the wolf has the ability to select that person as their teammate for the hole. They only have until the second player tees off to select the first player. Once the second player tees off the wolf can select to team up with the second player, but not the first. If you are playing in a foursome then the same thing applies, you can only pick the third player once they have teed off. Once the last player before the wolf has teed off, the wolf has to make a decision if they have not already chosen a teammate when they had the chance. They can pick the player who just teed off in front of them, or the can go alone (Lone Wolf).
- One last option is to go Blind Wolf. Going Blind Wolf means, as the wolf, you go alone before any other player tees off.
- The Wolf and a teammate win the hole = 2 points to each player
- The non-wolf teammates win the hole = 3 points to each player
- The Lone Wolf wins the hole = 4 points to the Wolf
- The non-wolf players win over the Lone Wolf = 2 points to each player
- The Blind Wolf wins the hole = 6 points to the Wolf
- The non-wolf players win over the Blind Wolf = 3 points to each player
- Ties = 0 points to each player
- The Wolf and a teammate win the hole = 1 point to each player
- The non-wolf lone player wins the hole = 4 points to the player
- The Lone Wolf wins the hole = 3 points to the Wolf
- The non-wolf players win over the Lone Wolf = 2 points to each player
- The Blind Wolf wins the hole = 6 points to the Wolf
- The non-wolf players win over the Blind Wolf = 3 points to each player
- Ties = 0 points to each player
- To reiterate from above, the person with the lowest point total coming into the 17th hole becomes the Wolf, and same goes for the 18th. This is a great opportunity for the low man to team up with some to catch the leader, go Lone Wolf to make up some points, go Blind Wolf to make up even more points, or Press if they are down by a ton.
- Tally up the points at the end and determine your winner!
Personally I think this is one of the best games out there. Enjoy!
